Amerizm & Jack Robbo, founders of Word Of Mouth Press.

Our design journey started around 2010, and we made our first steps towards it as a profession around 2018.

We found our visual identity as designers over a substantial time of sample searching, shooting film photography and producing music. We found ourselves exploring more obscure and experimental sound by delving deeper into the rabbit hole of artistic expression through sound, sampling, production, photography, artwork, and even moving visuals.

We like dark, thought-provoking music and sound design. Exploring experimental film and sound led to our love for film scores, from creating the sound of the mood and the artwork to matching it alongside the moving picture, something we fell very much in love with. On the other hand, we are music producers who like to rave and have grown up on old-school drum and bass and jungle music. As producers of early hardcore jungle and drum and bass, these are other aesthetics engrained into our identity, from the early 90s airbrush style euphoric artworks to the y2k early 2000s colourful and texturised treatments. It is an amalgamation of all these things, which creates our tastes andP identity.

Jack and I contacted each other online over ten years ago, discussing some vinyl cover options I had posted and then exploring and connecting through graffiti. Eventually, we met unintentionally through some mutual friends at a boxing day rave. The connection grew in conversation through our passions for music, graffiti, 90s culture, and, honestly, anything old school. We made a firm friendship from that night onwards and didn't spend much time apart after that, with Jack living at my house. The years went by as we raved and painted our youth away. We began producing again and focused on making music together, formulating a label, and making our artwork and merchandise.

In 2018, the design work began to creep back into play alongside the production. We got a studio together and would often go vinyl digging for samples, continuously stopping one another to admire the artwork of a vinyl we had just found.

With a strong passion and similar taste in sound and visuals, we took influence and began formulating our own, experimenting with different processes and formats. Our sound was developing alongside the artwork. We organically bounced off one another and helped push each other’s creative output further as we delved deeper and deeper into the design, constantly improving our skills in preparation for pressing our sound on vinyl and launching the record label.

From this process, ' Word of Mouth Press' was born, and we began to share some of the artworks that we had been developing behind the scenes initially for archiving purposes. These works had been collecting dust on our hard drives for a long time. The work was definitely at a standard we felt happy sharing at the time, feeling that much of the artwork these days needs more creativity, quality, passion and finesse than earlier generations had.

We developed a love for graphic design, combining our passions for the nostalgic 90s, dark, expressive artwork, and illustrative fused ideas. Jack has always drawn since a young age and started tattooing professionally at 16, so we were able to create unique, illustrative works. We soon decided we could make this our primary source of income and fund the modern-day vinyl pressing costs for our label. Funded in-house and independently. Naturally, the clients contacted us as we uploaded more artwork to Instagram.

So far, our client base consists primarily of event flyer-based work and logo creation.
We have also worked on t-shirt merchandise, branding, and vinyl artwork, but we would like to do more of this and consistently seek to expand our business.

CLIENT REFERENCES

I first reached out to Word Of Mouth through a friend who mentioned them during a creative discussion. I had an established street brand and was looking for a new designer to work with on a collection that was due to be released in Selfridges. We arranged a meeting and bonded instantaneously; I knew they were perfect for the job. Post-meeting, I sent them a brief outlining 12 design ideas for them to explore within an incredibly tight deadline.

Once the designs were complete, we discussed collections, target markets, current markets,
wearability and previous sales within the company. Based on our discussions, three designs were selected for production. They then designed tech packs for each collection, including tracksuits, t-shirts, varsity jackets, trench coats, crossbody bags, beanies, and socks centred on the three selected designs. The Tech Packs were then sent to the Selfridges buying and marketing team and our manufacturer in China.

The Word of Mouth Press team worked around the clock for me to ensure we met deadlines and the whole process ran smoothly.
After some time, they began helping me with my social media and brand marketing. Shortly after receiving the final products from the manufacturer, we discussed shooting some promo videos for the concession and our online platforms. We met in London, and they shot various relative BTS footage throughout the day, including the products at the concession at Selfridges, Oxford Street.

The entire experience with Word of Mouth Press was handled with care, precision, phenomenal creative output and attention to detail.
They exceeded my expectations and gained some friends during the process. Honestly, I cannot fault these guys; they go above and beyond! It was an absolute pleasure from start to finish, and I highly recommend them to anyone considering working with them.

Ejder

I am a Graphic Designer with over
10 years of experience working with some leading music artists in the industry.
Most recently, we used Word Of Mouth Press for behind-the-scenes photography & graffiti art within a music video for Birmingham's Jaykae & Mike Skinner. Their task for the project was to deface a police riot van with graffiti; for the video, they also took BTS photos and 8mm footage; we had a group of Birmingham City Football Clubs Zulu Army come down to feature in the video. I am reaffirming their work and ability to fulfil a brief to a great standard. Working with Word Of Mouth Press was a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Power Of Assembly / Adult Art Club

I began working with Word Of Mouth Press in June 2020. I recommend them for any graphic design work you may need. I contacted them through their Instagram page with a short brief to create a logo and promotional video for my online radio brand, Midnight Runner Radio. They were highly communicative and provided multiple design options following my brief. They produced the work efficiently and to a tight deadline, and I am thrilled with the finished design. They will be highly creative and complete your brief perfectly.

Midnight Runner

I highly recommend Word Of Mouth Press for
any graphic design work. I have known them for 10+ years and could not think of a better team to complete any work required.
Word Of Mouth Press has been my go-to for every design work I've needed over the past 5+ years, from event flyers for my label, logo work for my projects and even one-off website tour posters. Not only does their work hold up online, but it also looks spot on when printed on large scales. Their turnaround time exceeds expectations, and they're always on hand to give advice and make any necessary changes. I have the utmost trust in them and know that each project WOMP undertake will be treated with care and consideration.

Echo Chamber
I've known the guys at WOMP for a while, so it made sense to go to them for anything graphic design-related since I was already aware of their work standards. We needed a logo creation plus a series of event flyers. We wanted them all to be different but, at the same time, remain consistent with the overall theme of the event. Following the initial concept meeting, we kept an open line of communication to ensure ideas and feedback were exchanged freely. I will continue to recommend Word of Mouth Press wherever possible to keep Birmingham-based independent businesses alive and thriving because the bottom line is THEY DO GOOD WORK!

Fools In The House

I was recommended the applicant through a friend and have not been disappointed. My relationship with the applicant was seamless through mutual friends and similar interests. Any idea I had was swiftly converted into accurate visualisation, any criticism or further ideas I had were handled professionally, and the response time was immaculate. They provided various renditions of the work required and helped with brainstorming to take my idea further. The quality of work received was above and beyond expectations. I fully and wholeheartedly believe anyone requesting or deciding whether to work with them will be looked after, personally and professionally.

Spectrum Club Worldwide
I am the owner and Head Chef of a Jamaican takeaway in. Birmingham called Smokeys; I had my logo designed by Word Of Mouth Press and couldn't be happier. I gave them the name and a little about my character, and quickly, the logo was made and needed no adjustments. I was so pleased with it, it was perfect. The design stage took about 1-2 weeks, and in that time, they created my logo, menu, and loyalty card and came into the restaurant and painted the logo on the main wall using spray paint; it was a great experience with them.

Smokey’s
As a record label owner, I have used Word of Mouth press a handful of times for releases through the label and have been over the moon with the results. Most recently, Word Of Mouth fully designed and briefed a 7" Vinyl design for my Label "Everything Is Perfect Records", including logos and vinyl specifics. I was so happy with the results. They have my regular custom now. I have full faith in Word of Mouth’s ability to complete any jobs given to them to a great standard.
In conclusion, Word of mouth press are an extremely competent forward-thinking and
client-based company with proven results.
